Culture - Creating Suburbia
The Cardinia Cultural Centre became a home away from home for artists from Westside Circus, who were working with local young people on a unique community arts project in 2008.
The Creating Suburbia project involved 25 local young people aged 14 to 18 years learning a wide range of circus, personal development, team building and creative skills in a 30-week workshop program. Throughout the workshops the participants collaborated with Westside Circus and a local visual artist to ‘build a town’ through visual imagery and performance, where the script was derived from the participants' ideas and stories. The result was the Shadows on the Footpath performance, held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in November 2008.
Cardinia Shire Council and the Cardinia Cultural Centre presented Creating Suburbia with funding provided through Arts Victoria’s Community Partnerships program, Vic Health’s Community Arts Participation Scheme and local organisations the Cardinia Foundation and Delfin Lend Lease. The program is also staffed and supported by Oz Child Pakenham.
