The Shrine of Remembrance, unveiled in 1934, was a public initiative to provide a place to grieve and remember the thousands of Victorians who gave their lives during the First World War. A sacred site of commemoration for remembering Australian service in all our conflicts since Federation, this memorial atop a hill today prioritises education and interpretation.
This exhibition Bringing Them Home explores another aspect to the founding and present-day role of the Shrine, a growing awareness of the colonial frontier wars and the dispossession, displacement, cultural disconnection, and untold trauma Indigenous communities have suffered while defending Country. Through a series of post-graduate design studios undertaken by architecture students at the Melbourne School of Design, with a specific focus on the injustices suffered by returning Indigenous service personnel, themes such as materiality, repatriation, and diplomacy are critically interrogated.
In recognition of the Shine’s 90th anniversary, this exhibition also reveals the role small towns such as Tynong, Buchan and countless others played in providing the materials that built the Shrine, along with contributing the many who took up the call to serve Australia.
