Exhibition statement:
“Like so many, I have a life-love affinity with Eucalypts. I am inspired by their diversity, their strength, and -without sounding too anthropomorphic- their will to live.”, Fiz Eustance.

Gum Tree is a celebration of the various species of Eucalyptus trees within the Victorian landscape, specifically those found within Cardinia Shire Council, such as the Manna Gum and Narrow-leaf peppermint.

The installation is made up of multimedia paintings, en plein air drawings and sculptures created from found waste materials.

Artist statement:
Fiz Eustance (she/they) is an artist based across Dhudhuroa, Waywurru and Jaithmathang land in Mt Beauty and Woi Wurrung country in Melbourne. They spend their time making art, writing songs, walking in the forest, and thinking about where all the rubbish goes.

Eustance is inspired by the shapes and forms of the forest. Using found waste materials, such as paper and cardboard, they create their own sculptures in reference to these tree-shapes.

Recently, they have also been drawn to painting and drawing the landscape outside – creating works en plein air. For Eustance, this is a way in which they can mindfully connect with the country that they are on.
