The White Ribbon Art Gallery is designed to give people within the community the opportunity for reflection and contemplation of domestic violence through viewing the artworks, which represent the artists’ impressions and personal expression of this year’s theme. The theme for 2024 is ‘the courage to stand up, speak out and end Domestic Violence’.
The artworks are great conversation starters for anyone and may be especially inspirational for people who have escaped, are experiencing, or are at risk of domestic violence from any perspective. The aim is to display the artworks at the gallery in the Cardinia Cultural Centre for 12 days each November to coincide with White Ribbon Day in Australia.
In the previous 4 years, the artworks included many eye-catching and thought-provoking pieces in various forms – fine oil paintings, metal sculptures, poetry, digital displays, sketches from war torn countries, etc. The artworks in the gallery have also been eye-opening for psychologists, social science students and others who are employed in the domestic violence sector.
The White Ribbon Art Gallery was originally created as an online exhibition in 2020, during the coronavirus pandemic, to raise awareness about domestic violence, when people weren’t able to participate in the annual Walk Against Violence event.
