Sgarbossa has lived with a perceptual phenomenon known as synaesthesia his entire life. This involves stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leading to second involuntary experience in a second sensory or cognitive pathway. While some Synesthetes experience music as colour or taste when reading words, Sgarbossa experiences melting of objects, colour and patterns and makes connections through his different senses.
His work is made from incredibly precise and intricate geometric repetitions with considered colour combinations, following the practice of Gestalt Theory and sacred geometry. These theories draw on the belief that certain shapes, patterns and proportions hold meaning and are the fundamental building blocks of the universe, appearing in nature, art and architecture.
Sgarbossa explores the idea that our perception of the world is based on how we put together and interpret individual elements as one whole rather than considering each element separately. The effect of this process creates three dimensional illusions within the work when viewed from certain angles.
About the Artist:
Antonio Sgarbossa was born in the Italian town of Cittadella in 1956. Aged four his family migrated to Victoria where he was forcibly taken into care as one of the estimated 500,000 Forgotten Australians alongside many Indigenous Australians of the Stolen Generation and other children from migrant families. Through his lived experience of incarceration, homelessness and trauma, Scgabossa remarkably sees the world full of colour, pattern and repetition. He currently lives in Pakenham. Windows of Antonio is his first public exhibition.
